Just 3 days into Google+, I’m finding tons of possibilities for job seekers.

You can create a simple (or complex) profile shaped exactly as you want, and it will, no surprise here, come up near the top of Google searches for your name.

You can add ALL your contacts. By classifying them in circles, you control what you share with whom. What does that mean for job seekers? You can include all your professional contacts as well as your personal contacts, then determine which updates go to whom. For example, maybe you want to ask everyone you know if they have contacts in a particular company. You’ll send that update to all your circles. Your incisive critique of Hangover 2? Maybe just to your Friends circle.

It’s fun to think of ways you can take the Circles concept further. For example, I’ve created a Jobseekers circle where I’ll post quick tips and links for people seeking jobs. No need for that pesky e-newsletter I’d been considering. Maybe you want to post your organizing tips to interested parties. Now you can put them in a circle and organize away.

Like Twitter and unlike Facebook, you can follow anyone you like. It doesn’t have to be reciprocal. The other person gets to decide whether to add you to a circle and which circle to add you to. The names of circles aren’t divulged to the people in them.

Google plans to add business pages later this year. It looks like they’ll be similar to Facebook’s. We’ll see.

Mashable published a good introduction and a very useful cheat sheet. http://mashable.com/2011/07/16/google-plus-guide/#xwnJ5Bl4kLI In the interests of privacy, you’ll sometimes want to disable reshare to make sure your friends don’t repost to the world your Hangover 2 thoughts. After you post, you click on the arrow in the post’s upper right corner and select Disable reshare.

Go ahead, explore! And tell me what you think. I’ll continue to let you know what I discover.

Yes, you read that right–books. I still rely on actual, printed books for in-depth, detailed information to help with every step of the job search. Here are some I’ve found particularly helpful, from a list I compiled for Framingham Public Library’s Staff Recommends column.

What Color is Your Parachute? by Richard N. Bolles. Still a great compendium of job-search tips and career-choice exercises. But be selective. If you do all the exercises, you’ll hit retirement age before you choose a career.

Resumes and Cover Letters

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to The Perfect Resume by Susan Ireland. Excellent samples and tips covering common and unusual situations.

No Nonsense Resumes by Wendy S. Enelow. Samples and keyword phrases for dozens of fields. Titles in Wendy Enelow’s and Louise Kursmark’s Expert Resumes series for various fields are also excellent.

Resumes for the Rest of Us by Arnold Boldt. Military to civilian, parents returning to work, skilled trades, ex-offenders, retirees, and other “unconventional career paths.”

Step-by-Step Resumes by Evelyn U. Salvador. Lots of useful templates, including bullet and achievement worksheets for specific fields, discussed in print with samples on CD.

15-Minute Cover Letter by Michael Farr. A quick and thorough guide to this essential step.

Interviews

The Best Answer by Deb Gottesman. Not a list of questions and answers but terrific advice on how to approach every interview. Hint: preparation and research are key. Out of print but still available in some libraries.

Knock ‘em Dead. Known for its wide-ranging list of challenging interview questions and suggested responses.

Sell Yourself in Any Interview by Oscar Adler. How to prepare for and excel in interviews. Excellent overview.

Social Media

Find a Job through Social Networking: Use LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, and More to Advance Your Career by Diane Crompton. Job 650.14. A terrific introduction to critical new avenues for job hunters.

And while I had an audience, I went ahead and recommended a novel as well. You can read about that here: www.framinghamlibrary.org/staffrec/staffrec.htm

What job search books have helped you?

Want (lots) more? The Ultimate Unemployment Reading List suggests titles on unemployment, change, networking, skill building, job hunting, starting your own business, depression and anger–as well as a few uplifting and inspiring books.

In the acres—no, oceans—of tips for job-hunters, the word company pops up everywhere. Company research. Target companies. Company contacts. What, I keep wondering, about people who might want to venture beyond the corporate world? To nonprofits, government, the public sector? People like, to pick a random example . . . me?

I graduated from college in a different, now nearly forgotten recession and found a job as a secretary at the Ace Carbon Paper Company in South Boston. After twelve eye-opening ink-spattered months at the carbon paper factory, I scurried off to the world of nonprofits and from there to public libraries. End of corporate career.

If you, too, are interested in the public sector, the good news is: there are lots of online resources. And the bad news? Lots of online resources. Fortunately, one stands out. A good place to begin your nonprofit search is Idealist.org, www.idealist.org.

Along with their extensive listings for nonprofit jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities, Idealist offers a searchable database of more than 64,000 nonprofit organizations as well as extensive resources for nonprofits. The Idealist Career Center provides information and advice about job searching and careers, and the Idealist blog is packed with helpful articles. If you’re thinking of pursuing a graduate degree, check out their Public Service and Graduate Education Resource Center.

You’d do well to start your search at Idealist, but you’ll probably also want to make use of some of the other resources described in the sections that follow: Sites with Job Listings; Information about Nonprofit Organizations; and Information about Massachusetts Nonprofits.

Sites with Job Listings

Bridgestar www.bridgestar.org/MyCareerCenter/SearchJobs.aspx Extensive listings for senior positions in nonprofit organizations

Chronicle of Philanthropy http://philanthropy.com/jobs National nonprofit job listings focused on executive and development positions. Can be searched by location, field, and position. The site also provides employer profiles, discussions, and news and advice.

Commongood Careers www.cgcareers.org/find-a-job A search firm for professional positions in the nonprofit sector, it’s nationwide but strongest in the Northeast.

Council on Foundations www.cof.org/programsandservices/jobs/index.cfm?navItemNumber=14858 Jobs in foundations.

Craigslist www.craigslist.org Many smaller (and some large) nonprofits advertise on Craigslist. Check the nonprofit jobs category, but also try limiting all jobs by checking non-profit. Results from the two searches can differ.

DC Public Affairs + Communications Jobs http://publicaffairsjobs.blogspot.com Frequently updated. Most jobs are in nonprofits or the public sector. Most but not all located in Washington D.C.

ExecSearches.com NonProfit Jobs www.nonprofit-jobs.org Job listings, primarily on the executive level.

Nonprofit Career Network www.nonprofitcareer.com/index.html Job listings and a directory of nonprofit organizations.

NonProfit Connect: Careers www.npconnect.org/page/careers Opportunities in nonprofit, educational, and government agencies located in the Midwest.

Nonprofit Jobs Cooperative www.nonprofitjobscoop.org Most listed jobs are in California or Massachusetts, with a smattering in other states.

Nonprofit Oyster www.nonprofitoyster.com A variety of nonprofit jobs, most of them higher level.

NonProfitJobs.org (Community Careers) www.nonprofitjobs.org This “online gathering place” for not-for-profit employers and management personnel lists a variety of nonprofit jobs.

NonProfit Times www.nonprofitjobseeker.com Besides listing jobs, the online version of this monthly newsletter is a good source for information on what’s happening in the nonprofit world.

Opportunity Knocks www.opportunityknocks.org Job postings from a leading source of nonprofit listings. The Resources section offers a wealth of information for nonprofit job seekers.

Philanthropy News Digest – Job Corner http://fdncenter.org/pnd/jobs Jobs at foundations and nonprofit organizations.

ProAssociationCareers.org www.proassociationcareers.org Job opportunities in professional associations and societies. Many of the listings are provided by SimplyHired. Limiting the search to association jobs retrieves the most useful results. Helpful career articles.

SocialService.com http://socialservice.com All areas of social services, including counseling, mental health, substance abuse, disability.

Information about Nonprofit Organizations

Employer research is just as critical in a public-sector job search as it is for the private sector. Targeting organizations, researching them, making connections, tracking employment listings on their sites—all can substantially improve your odds of finding a job that you’ll love.

A survey of employers in Orange County, California, gives us a snapshot of hiring managers’ opinions about resumes and cover letters at this moment in technological time. The survey was conducted by the Center for Career and Life Development at Saddleback College.

It turns out these hiring managers prefer a straightforward approach. Half want chronological resumes, 39% prefer combination resumes, and only 6% go for the functional model. All those reformatting skills job seekers have mastered to address security concerns are becoming as obsolete as the ability to repair a typewriter; 63% of the hiring people prefer MS Word for your emailed resume, 36% vote for pdf, and only 1% go for rtf text documents. Nobody wants plain text—but nobody wants online resumes either. 9%, however, will accept video resumes. This is California, after all, home of Hollywood and Elle Woods. The vast majority prefer resumes as email attachments; only 2% want them pasted into emails without accompanying attachments.

All that time you’ll save, now that you don’t have to convert to plain text? You can devote it to trimming your cover letters. Those who look at cover letters (43% require them; 30% don’t read them) made one thing clear: they want those letters to be short. 47% vote for half a page; 24% simply say the shorter the better.

As for the rest? Length of resume—depends. Number of years of experience—depends. Resume paper—no preference. The #1 mistake they see: spelling and grammar. What they look for in a resume: related experience; qualifications and skills; readability. 75% want gaps in employment history addressed, either in the resume or the cover letter. 46% use database systems to manage some or all resumes; 46% don’t use them and don’t plan to.

And the takeaway is . . . . Don’t worry about security; unless the employer specifies otherwise, you can go with the traditional attached MS Word document. Do concentrate on focusing, trimming, tailoring, getting that spelling and grammar right. Clear, readable resumes and cover letters that demonstrate you’re the right person for the job will trump format 99% of the time. I just made up that statistic but, hey, I bet it’s in the ballpark.

Those of you who want more, more, more statistics (I know you’re out there, itching to crunch a few numbers) can dig into the full results here: www.saddleback.edu/jobs/documents/2010OrangeCountyResumeSurveyfullpresentation.pdf

For employer views on other job-search strategies, check out this interview on Job-Hunt.org, www.job-hunt.org/employers/Fortune-500/fortune-500-recruiter-western-union.shtml. Two recruiters from Western Union talk about what they look for in candidates—in-depth research on the company (Google Alerts, Hoover, Yahoo Finance, recent news articles); networking interactions in which candidates give as well as take. Both use LinkedIn extensively to identify and reach out to candidates and to ask for referrals.

Career Hub recently discussed the results of a 2009 survey of employers’ use of social networks to recruit: www.careerhubblog.com/main/2010/08/recruiting-via-social-networks-on-the-rise.html 80% use or plan to use social networks to source candidates, 77% use them to find passive candidates, 46% will spend more on social networking, and 36% will spend less on job boards.

Watch out LinkedIn, here everybody comes!

In the libraries and ESL program where I work, many of the job seekers are looking for entry-level positions, most often service jobs—a cashier at a drugstore or grocery store; counter or kitchen help at a fast food restaurant; salesclerk at a discount store. Their English may be somewhat limited; their computer skills sketchy or nonexistent.

Today’s managers generally send these candidates off to the library to fill out online applications—typically lengthy and confusing documents capable of flummoxing even the most computer adept. And if it’s an entry-level position you want, you’re nearly certain to encounter a much bigger obstacle: a grueling online personality test, screen after screen of complicated multiple-choice questions. My role in the process is translator, interpreter, cheerleader, comforter, avoider of the fatal back button that sends all your hard work swirling off into limbo, never to be retrieved.

When an applicant and I finally stumble across the finish line, the cheering and high-fiving, hugging and fist pumping are worthy of the Boston Marathon. In only one case have I intentionally counseled someone to fudge an answer. I suggested that a Haitian man respond to questions like “I worry more than I used to” as he would have before the earthquake demolished his country.

I’ve gotten so I brace myself the minute a job hunter utters the dreaded phrase online application. That’s probably why, on the day I came across an application with a sense of humor, I didn’t get the joke.

The job hunter, a young Ethiopian man, was trying for a customer-service/stocking job at a company whose logo, website, and uniforms prominently feature the color green. First we searched high and low on the company site for the appropriate job listings. Then we struggled to figure out how to select the location to apply to. By the time we got to the questions, I was anticipating, teeth gritted, a grueling endurance test. The first question sent me into a tailspin. It read as follows:

What’s your favorite color?

o Green

“What? What?” I sputtered. “What is this??” It took the job hunter’s peals of laughter to alert me to the fact that I’d encountered an actual joke. On an online application!

We sailed through the informational questions—straightforward, worded clearly enough for anyone with a reasonable command of English to understand, containing another funny but telling question (How often do you smile? Always? Most of the time? Sometimes? Never?).

Next came the statement “Congratulations! You have completed the first step in our selection process. Please complete the next section so we may obtain some additional information from you.” To my jaded eyes, this is a little masterpiece of clarity and compassion. It cheers you on. It explains where you are in the process. It treats like a—yes—person. It’s followed by a question.

Are you having fun yet?

o Yes
o No
o Don’t know

“Yes!” we answered, and proceeded.

The next section, tailored to the specific position, was similarly relevant, straightforward, and simply stated—if not actually funny. Each screen provided an indication of the percent of the application now complete. Again, thoughtful, humane, generous; with only two previous jobs, this applicant finished the form at 70%.

It strikes me that by adopting this one feature, even those employers with no sense of humor (or favorite color), even those in love with their personality tests, could significantly reduce the pain their applicants endure for a miniscule chance at a minimum wage job. I’ve seen more than one job seeker reduced to tears simply from uncertainty over when (and if) the test will ever end.

As for me, I’m planning to become a regular at this company’s stores, where I expect to be greeted by happy, green-clad workers, outstanding workers chosen from an enormous pool of people only this company gets to consider—those who lack the ability, critical in this online job market, to psych out the acceptable response to questions like, oh, “Most people steal at work.”

Sometimes it’s all about the research. For those looking for jobs in particular industries, Yahoo Finance http://biz.yahoo.com/ic offers a treasure trove of current information concerning nearly 200 industries, from Home Furnishing Stores to Biotechnology. Each Industry Center page links to Latest News and Top Headlines, where you’ll find breaking industry stories and profiles for the companies involved. Using RSS feeds for your industries of choice, you’ll be able to stay on top of developments. The Company Index in each Industry Center lists companies in the field and links to information on them.

How do you turn this into a chance at a job? Check out the innovative tips in Mark Bartz’s post, “How to Use Linkedin RSS NewsFeeds to Find Unadvertised Jobs” www.careerthoughtleaders.com/blog/how-to-use-linkedin-rss-newsfeeds-to-find-unadvertised-jobs. He explains how to take the industry news you’ll find in Yahoo Finance and LinkedIn Groups and use it to track down unadvertised jobs. The post focuses on medical sales, but the ideas apply to most industries.

Of course there are zillions—yes, zillions, precisely—of resources for learning about employers. I list several in the Employer Information section of Websites for Your Job Search. Hungry for insider tidbits? Check out the sites Alison Doyle describes in her post on Company Reviews: http://jobsearch.about.com/b/2010/05/07/company-reviews.htm.

Massachusetts JobQuest. the state’s job listing site (https://web.detma.org/JobQuest), posts positions that New England employers list for free. It also links to all Massachusetts jobs from JobCentral, a large employer-sponsored board. Because posting is free, the site lists entry-level and small-employer jobs that you won’t find anywhere else.

JobQuest has a terrific new interface that makes it one of the easier job boards to use. Some of the things I like about it:

The list of Top 10 Occupations on the front page includes hard-to-search fields like First-Line Supervisors/Managers of Retail Sales Workers and Customer Service Representative. Click on an occupation to get the full range of positions that fit that description, regardless of the job titles the postings use.

The logical, clearly worded category list is another feature that makes it easy to search broadly.

You can use a state map to select regions where you’d like to work.

This easy-to-use website is well worth visiting regularly to check for local jobs. And it includes searchable databases of Massachusetts vocational training programs and of events and programs for job seekers.

For a more extensive list of recommended job-search sites, see my post on Websites for Your Job Search in Greater Boston.
