Online Job Listings: A Few Good Places to Start–General

Craigslist http://boston.craigslist.org Unique classified ads for jobs. If your field doesn’t fit cleanly in one of the categories under “Jobs,” click on the Jobs heading and type keywords (cashier, for example) in the “Search Jobs” box. If you’re looking for a job like nanny or housecleaner, try searching Gigs by keyword.

Glassdoor www.glassdoor.com Extensive job listings, accompanied by employer ratings. Free registration is required to use the site. Click the Ratings tab for a listed job to see what employees think of the employer.

Indeed.com www.indeed.com Search engine with listings drawn from varied sources. Most come from employer sites or well-established job boards.

LinkedIn Jobs www.linkedin.com/jobs For LinkedIn members. Indicates how you are connected to the employer.

Linkup www.linkup.com Search engine compiling jobs from company websites only; fewer scam listings.

The Boston Globe www.boston.com/jobs They partner with monster.com.

Boston Startup Guide bostonstartupsguide.com/boston-startup-jobs Jobs and internships in Boston-area startups. Also provides info on and listings of area startups.

JobsInMA.com www.jobsinma.com Massachusetts job listings from a company that runs job banks in several New England states.

Massachusetts JobQuest https://jobquest.dcs.eol.mass.gov/jobquest The state’s job bank. Site also lists training programs. Good source for entry-level as well as other jobs.

Monster.com www.monster.com One of the largest. Massachusetts based, partners with The Boston Globe.

Snagajob www.snagajob.com/find-jobs Hourly jobs. Very useful site. When possible, apply from employer site rather than through Snagajob.

USAJobs.gov www.usajobs.gov Official job site of the U.S. government. Here’s an article on Avoiding the Most Common USAJOBS.gov Mistakes.

VentureLoop.com www.ventureloop.com Jobs with startups funded by venture capital.

Niche Job Listing Sites–Directories

Directjobs.com www.directjobs.com Searches professional association job boards. You can click Employers and use keywords to find association boards in your field. Not comprehensive but well worth a look.

VetJobs.com Niche Job Board Listings http://vetjobs.com/niche-job-board-sites Links to job sites in a wide range of occupations.

Employer Information–General

Google (www.google.com) companies or organizations to find their websites. You can set up Google Alerts (www.google.com/alerts) to follow the news on your target companies.

Inc.com’s 5000 Fastest-Growing Companies. www.inc.com/inc5000/list Based on percentage revenue growth in the previous 3 years.

Manta.com www.manta.com Searchable, sortable directory of small businesses.

Yahoo Finance’s Industry Center https://finance.yahoo.com/industries Select a field from the top menu and scroll past stock quotes for up-to-date articles. You can search for detailed company information by company name or stock symbol.

For employee reviews and salary info: www.vault.com and www.glassdoor.com. Glassdoor is especially comprehensive; free registration is required.

And check LinkedIn www.linkedin.com (for updates, follow companies you’re interested in), Facebook www.facebook.com (you can “like” companies and post/respond to topics on their pages), Twitter http://twitter.com (follow and direct message employers).

Employer Information–Local

Select “databases” on the Minuteman Library Network Research & Information page (www.minlib.net/online-resources/login) for business directories and to search for articles about employers in The Boston Globe and other newspapers and magazines. Many libraries provide free access to business databases like AtoZ Databases and Business Collection.

Boston Public Library’s Kirstein Business Branch www.bpl.org/services-central-library/kblic BPL’s business section contains extensive resources, and the expert librarians answer question in person and by phone. Their web page lists business and career sites.

Boston Business Journal http://boston.bizjournals.com/boston News and directory of local businesses.

Boston Globe Top Places to Work. https://www.bostonglobe.com/business/specials/top-places-to-work/2019/11/14/the-top-places-work-massachusetts/tsx9qZhTHmRJjlWVIrL1HP/story.html Usually published in November.

High Tech Blogs, Boston Focused. A number of blogs devote themselves to Boston’s high-tech industry. Two I like are: Beantown Web beantownweb.blogspot.com is primarily but not exclusively focused on the tech sector. High Tech in the Hub www.hightechinthehub.com contains articles on the tech industry.

VentureFizz Company Research venturefizz.com/bizzpages/r/boston Searchable list of Boston-area technology companies (software, internet, mobile, hardware, cloud, etc) with brief descriptions and links to company sites.

Networking, Social and Otherwise–General

Job-Hunt’s Social Media section www.job-hunt.org/social-networking/social-networking.shtml is a good source of guidance on using social media in your job search.

LinkedIn www.linkedin.com The most popular career-related social networking site. You can develop a profile, build a contact list, search employers, make connections via your contacts’ contacts.

Meetup www.meetup.com Find job-search networking groups or other groups of interest near you.

Networking, Social and Otherwise–Local

Acton Networkers www.actonnetworkers.com This active group holds meetings in Acton and Hopkinton. Among the useful info on their site are detailed lists of local networking groups and of area user groups and trade associations.

Boston Events List for Professionals www.bostoneventslist.com Extensive list of Boston-area professional networking and entrepreneurial events, conferences, trade shows, and more.

VentureFizz Networking Calendar venturefizz.com/calendar/r/boston An outstanding resource for the tech field.

Wind Networking www.windnetworking.net This greater-Boston networking community for professionals in transition holds regular meetings in 3 different locations.
